Senior Data Engineer

  • Hybrid
    • Gent, Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium

Job description

Are you ready to take the lead in shaping the face of an industry-changing pricing solution? At Markmi, we’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer to redefine how data flows into our platform.

In 2024 we released Markmi, a pricing platform for fashion retail that enables merchandising teams to make smarter, faster, and more profitable pricing (markdown) decisions.

By leveraging fashion-focused intelligence and advanced forecasting, Markmi enables fashion teams to set optimal price markdowns that swiftly respond to market shifts, protect margins, and drive revenue, all without relying on outdated spreadsheets or generic tools. Our algorithms, trained specifically on fashion data, empower retailers to reduce manual workload, gain better control over the markdown process, and achieve superior sales outcomes. Markmi demonstrates that with the right tool, fashion teams can confidently use price markdowns as a powerful asset to drive growth.

As a Senior Data Engineer your primary responsibility will be to design, build, and own the data platform that powers Markmi,  from ingestion to analytics and ML. In the short term, this means hardening our existing pipelines, creating new ones, improving data quality, and shaping our core data models. Over time you’ll have the opportunity to redefine our architecture, frameworks, and infrastructure. You will take the lead in these efforts, incorporate feedback, and own the outcomes of your decisions.

In this role, you will work side by side with product management, software engineers, data scientists, and industry experts. Collaboratively, the goal is to ensure Markmi is fed data reliably so the product delivers measurable business value, every day.

Job requirements

🚀 Your responsibilities

  • Act as a central pillar of the Markmi Development Squad by building and maintaining the data platform behind a SaaS solution for price (markdown) management in fashion.

  • Architect and evolve cloud-based data solutions that integrate cleanly with our existing stack.

  • Establish end-to-end observability for pipelines & data quality, automate tests, and set actionable alerts with clear runbooks.

  • Lead client data onboarding, design reusable ingestion connectors and data contracts. Automate mapping/validation, and ensure secure, reliable delivery into our core data models.

🚀 Your key requirements

  • Shaping, curating and storing data is your jam.

  • MS or BS in computer science/engineering (or equivalent experience).

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering.

  • Strong in Python and SQL; comfortable in a typical Unix environment.

  • Ability to initiate, plan, and execute projects with a strong sense of ownership and pragmatic decision-making.

  • Solid understanding of data modeling, warehouse design, and cloud environments (GCP) enabling analysts/scientists to thrive.

  • You’re open to developing the necessary communication skills to connect with and guide business stakeholders and clients.

🚀 Bonus skills that can set you apart

  • Generalist engineering skills (e.g., infrastructure as code) to collaborate across the stack.

  • Affinity for data science algorithms and AI.

  • Experience with dbt.

  • Experience in the retail or fashion industry, specifically in pricing.
